Timothy Harris CEng FRINA RCNC


Tim is the Head of Surface Ship Structures in the UK MOD Naval Authority Group and a DE&S Specialist Fellow. where he is responsible for the structural safety assurance of all MOD surface shipping. In this role Tim faces Lloyd’s Register and DNV classification societies where he ensures their rules and regulations are suitable for delivering the required outcomes for the department.


He joined MOD as a constructive technician apprentice in 1997 with Superintendent Ships Devonport before joining the DESG scheme where he completed a MEng in Integrated Engineering at Cardiff University that was followed by the Naval Architecture MSc at University College London. On completion of his training, Tim joined Frigates IPT where he was the professional naval architect for Type 22 and Type 23 frigates managing structures, stability and signatures. He then spent five years setting up the £815m Submarine Technology Development Programme. He moved to the Naval Authority in 2016 in his current role.


Tim is the Naval Ship Code Chapter 2 Lead for the International Naval Safety Association and is also a member of the Lloyd’s Register Ship Design and Applications Inter-Sessional Working Group. Tim also provides representation to TTCP and the ABCANZ groups.
