Stein Håvard Bergstad

Head of Naval Systems Division, Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency
Stein Håvard Bergstad was promoted to Commodore and took command of the Naval Systems Division in Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) January 2021. The division is responsible for naval projects and materiel for the Norwegian Armed Forces. Bergstad was born in Finnmark in the most northern part of Norway in 1966 and started his military carrier at the Petty Officer School in 1985. He has completed the Naval Academy (1991), Naval staff academy (1999), National Logistics Course (2004), Armed Forces Staff College (2011), NATO Defence College in Rome (2015) and the SERA course in 2018 at Institute of Higher National Defense studies in Paris. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he served in the Royal Norwegian Navy as an engineer and Chief Engineer. In 1996 after his sea duty Berstad held various technical positions in the Norwegian Defence Logistic Organisation (NDLO). In 2000 Bergstad joined the Fridtjof Nansen-class Frigate project as part of the site team at the shipyard in Spain. He was promoted to Commander and Head of Maintenance Management branch in NDLO Naval Systems in 2003 and was responsible for the navy’s maintenance management system and maintenance philosophy. Bergstad returned to the Frigate Project and Spain in 2006 as Site Manager and during this period, the project delivered HNoMS Roald Amundsen and HNoMS Otto Sverdrup to the navy. In 2008 Bergstad was hired by Framo Engineering AS responsible for customer support contracts. He returned to the armed forces in 2009, responsible for Coast guard and Mine warfare related projects in the Navy staff. From 2013 he was Head of the Process & Quality department in Naval Systems, expanding the use of the IFS ERP system in NDLO and the navy, and responsible for inspections of vessels and certified materiel in the Norwegian navy. Bergstad was promoted to Captain in 2014 as Head of the Project department for Naval Systems in NDMA. The department is responsible for implementation and management of all naval materiel projects to the Norwegian Armed Forces. In 2018 he was appointed to the Ministry of Defence as deputy head of the Materiel Section. The section is responsible for the implementation and management of all materiel projects in the Norwegian Armed Forces Stein Håvard is married to Kari and they have four adult children. The family lives outside Bergen and he mainly focuses his spare time on family activities. He enjoys sailing, running and cross-country skiing.
