Peter Spayne

Peter Spayne is a PhD researcher at Cranfield University's Center for Defence Engineering, specialising in the assurance of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems. A serving Warrant Officer Weapon Engineer, he brings extensive expertise in Mine Warfare technology and autonomous systems.

With over 21 years of operational service and 13 years of academic study, Peter has authored several high-impact papers on safe autonomy and developed the Safe to Operate Itself Safely framework, which provides organisations with the methodologies needed to trust Artificial Intelligence as a Controlling Agent in Autonomous Systems within military environments. His research bridges the gap between operational experience and academic insight, contributing to the evolving discourse on AI assurance and safety in defence applications.
