FMV, Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration, has placed an order worth about £95 million with Saab to purchase more of its Torped 47 lightweight torpedoes.

As per a recent press statement from the firm, the new order for the Saab Lightweight Torpedoes (SLWT) and torpedo tubes totals approximately SEK 1.3 billion — roughly £95 million — with the weapons set to be delivered from 2026.

The Torped 47 projectiles have primarily been designed to be fired from submarines, but they can also be adapted for use from surface ships and helicopters.

The firm says the weapon was specifically designed for use in shallow waters such as the Baltic Sea, where complex seabed topography can make target location and weapon navigation particularly challenging.

The company’s new order follows on from a previous SLWT contract with the FMV which saw the first torpedoes delivered from 2022.

Head of Saab’s Kockums division Mats Wicksell commented: “We are proud to continue to support Sweden in its efforts to modernise underwater weapon systems in order to protect the Baltic Sea region.

“This state-of-the-art system is providing the Swedish Armed Forces with increased capabilities, including torpedoes, spare parts, training systems, and technical support.”
