Successful Test Of Radar System For New Spanish Frigate
)
Lockheed Martin’s SPY-7 Radar, set to be installed on Spain’s new F-110 frigates, has just completed a successful test.
As per a recent press statement by Navantia, the contractor building five F-110 Multi-Mission Frigates for the Spanish Navy, the AN/SPY-7(V)2 radar successfully tracked airborne objects in a recent test at Lockheed Martin’s Aegis SCOMBA Integration Center (ASIC) in Moorestown, New Jersey.
The first three of the five Bonifaz-class frigates are currently being built. Construction work on the first ship started in April 2022 in Navantia’s Ferrol shipyard in northwest Spain; it is expected to be launched in 2025 and the commissioning date for the first frigate is scheduled for 2028.
The multipurpose ships will be armed with the Kongsberg-developed Naval Strike Missile and Raytheon’s Evolved SeaSparrow Block 2 anti-air missiles; the frigates will also be used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions. The estimated value of the five-vessel programme is put at about €4.3 billion.
Chandra Marshall, Lockheed Martin’s vice president of Multi-Domain Combat Solutions, said the successful tracking “confirms the system’s maturity and readiness for comprehensive performance testing.”
Lockheed Martin expects to formally deliver the completed SPY-7 radar system in 2026.
Carlos Lopez, F-110 Program Director at Navantia, said: “This achievement marks a critical milestone in the F-110 Program and showcases the progress made, ensuring that the program is on track.”
