)
Kraken Technology Group has been showcasing its USV, the K3 Scout, to prospective special operations force customers.
The U.K. defence firm established in late 2020 now has more than 100 employees and anticipates launching four more international bases in the next year, according to a recent company press statement.
Its K3 Scout comes in four size variants: Light, Medium, Heavy, and Max. The largest of the four, the K3 Scout Max, boasts a 2,000-nautical-mile range and a 10-tonne modular payload capacity. It is just over 18.5 metres long and has a maximum speed of 40 knots.
It can be piloted remotely, or missions can be carried out autonomously. It can optionally be fitted with sonar and C5ISR capabilities; the USV can be configured for a range of littoral and surface-warfare strike and ISR missions.
The firm’s press statement noted: “The company’s rapid expansion is due to Kraken’s high-speed, autonomous systems offering an agile alternative capable of undertaking persistent missions at scale.
“By delivering affordable, versatile platforms that extend the reach and resilience of naval forces, Kraken is redefining what is possible in littoral and open-sea operations.”
The firm is attending SOF Week 2025 in Tampa, Florida, and staging demonstrations at the docks outside the Tampa Convention Centre.
Kraken also offers a UUV/USV hybrid, its K4 Manta, which can travel both as a hydrofoil on the surface for speed or below the water, as missions require.
