Light Structures AS was founded in 2001 and evolved as a spin-off from the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment. The company is enjoying a steady growth in the defence market and is today the world's leading provider of fiber optic hull stress and other structure monitoring systems.

Fiber optic monitoring solutions are gaining popularity in the defence community due to the unrivaled performance and reliability. Light Structures' Hull Structural Monitoring system was the first fiber optic solution to enter the market and has proven itself through several years of operation onboard OPVs, frigates and other NATO naval ships.

Safe and cost-effective operation of a vessel demands exact knowledge of the ship’s design and awareness of the operation risks and their consequences. One of the challenges involved has been the lack of information to the bridge about the actual load on the hull. Historically this has been resolved relying on navigators’ judgment and experience, but with Light Structures’ technology it is possible to get live data via the SENSFIB Navy™Hull Stress Monitoring solution.

SENSFIB Navy™ is especially suited for high speed vessels, catamarans and composite hulls. The system reduces the risk of accumulating damage during non-critical operations.

By monitoring the stress responses in the hull structure during operations we can provide the navigators with online information about the load margin, even for novel hull designs and material choices. The same data is stored and analyzed, and gives valuable input for maintenance planning and fleet utilization.
